This costume is from Telemark. Near the end of the last century, folk costumes were hardly used at all. Clothes that had been mass produced had gained a foothold, and all over Norway, people dressed wearing the fashions of the times, influenced by Europe's fashions. Setesdal, Hallingdal and Telemark were a few areas in western Norway where folk costumes were still worn.
Interest in the folk costume increased and by 1890, the Hardanger costume was worn throughout all Norway and became known as the "national" costume. It was even worn in areas where the people had kept their own folk costume traditions.
